Summary

    ROUND 1 is the first episode in the ALIEN STAGE series. It introduces the protagonist of the series, Mizi, and Sua. The episode showcases the first round of the in-universe life-or-death show Alien Stage, starring Mizi and Sua, singing the duet My Clematis.

    ROUND 1 shows a little of the universe of Alien Stage, and the background of Mizi and Sua as childhood friends who are competing against each other. In a twist, it is shown that the loser of the round is killed.

    Ever since Mizi was a child, she dreamed of performing alongside Sua. When they face each other during the round, the passionate feelings between them can only be understood by each other.[2]

    To Sua, nothing except Mizi mattered for her, not even her own ending. In a world where they're oppressed by the Segyein, focusing on Mizi and nothing else was her own way to survive. Nicknamed the 'Ice Princess', Sua's smile only ever came because of Mizi.[3]

    Sua, in a way, didn't let Mizi grow up. She let Mizi dream and think that she would have a good ending, because Mizi's innocence was her way to escape. Because of Sua, Mizi was never prepared to face the reality of the world: as such, after her first loss, Mizi crumbled entirely.[a][4]

    The Segyein don't believe in God, yet it's a fundamentally human thing. Mizi believing in such a human concept shows how she recognizes her own nature, with her "God" being Sua, to further showcase how deep their relationship goes.[5]

Trivia

  • ROUND 1 was supposed to be released in August 2022.[6]
  • Sua purposefully gave more lines to Mizi so she would win. This can be seen by the line distribution in My Clematis, which favors Mizi.[7]
  • In the initial concept of ALIEN STAGE, Mizi and Sua were two highschool girls named Mia and Suzy who wanted to become singers. Suzy would be eaten by an alien after losing.[8]
  • When Mizi and Sua stare into each other's eyes while singing, their emotional intensities reach their maximum.[9]
  • Mizi experiences a mental breakdown after Sua is shot.[9]
